The Hub
Statement of Intent
At Gomersal Primary School, we are committed to supporting the whole child. The Hub is a nurturing, inclusive space designed to support pupils’ emotional regulation, wellbeing, and access to learning.
We recognise that children may, at times, feel overwhelmed, anxious, or dysregulated. The Hub provides a safe, calm environment where pupils can take time to regulate, reflect, and re-engage with learning when they are ready.
Alongside this, The Hub is a space where targeted interventions take place to support pupils’ individual needs, including their communication, physical development, and mental health. Our aim is to remove barriers to learning and ensure every child feels understood, supported, and able to thrive.
How do we teach and support pupils in The Hub at Gomersal?
The Hub is a flexible and responsive environment tailored to the needs of each child. We support pupils through:
Emotional Regulation Support
Children can access The Hub when they need time away from the classroom to regulate their emotions in a safe and supportive space. Staff use a calm, consistent approach to help pupils recognise and manage their feelings.
Sensory Provision
The room is equipped with a range of sensory resources designed to support children with sensory processing needs and to promote calmness and focus.
Targeted Interventions
We deliver a range of interventions, including:
- · Speech and language support
- · Mental health and wellbeing interventions
- · Occupational therapy (OT) and physiotherapy (physio)
- · Learning-focused interventions to support progress
- · Individualised Support
- · Activities and strategies are tailored to meet the specific needs of each child, ensuring they are supported both emotionally and academically.
Outdoor Sensory Development
We are developing an outdoor sensory area to extend our provision, allowing children to benefit from nature-based regulation, movement, and sensory exploration.
Curriculum Progression
In The Hub, learning and development are carefully planned and adapted to meet individual needs. Progress is tracked through personalised targets linked to:
- · Emotional regulation and wellbeing
- · Communication and interaction
- · Physical development
- · Independence and self-regulation
Where appropriate, these targets align with wider curriculum goals and external professional guidance.
How can parents help at home?
We value strong partnerships with parents and carers. You can support your child by:
- · Encouraging open conversations about feelings and emotions
- · Using consistent language around emotions (e.g. calm, worried)
- · Practising calming strategies, such as breathing exercises or quiet time
- · Supporting routines, which help children feel secure and regulated
- · Sharing any concerns or updates with school so we can work together
If your child accesses The Hub, we are always happy to discuss strategies and approaches that can be used both in school and at home.
